Thomas Ruff
Thomas Ruff is a German photographer, born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, Germany. A graduate of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Ruff is a key figure in the Düsseldorf School of Photography. His work is defined by a conceptual approach that pushes the boundaries of the photographic medium, experimenting with scale, digital manipulation, and diverse subject matter—from portraits and architecture to astronomy and internet imagery.
Ruff first gained recognition in the late 1980s with his striking, large-scale portraits, which present subjects in a neutral, almost clinical manner, questioning the authenticity of photographic representation. Over the years, he has explored a wide range of themes and techniques, from digitally altered architectural images in Häuser and star-filled celestial landscapes in Sterne, to reworked internet imagery in Nudes and his transformed NASA photographs in ma.r.s., where he manipulates color and perspective to create otherworldly compositions.
His work has been widely exhibited in major institutions, including the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Haus der Kunst in Munich. His photographs are held in renowned collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London, and the Stedelijk Museum in Ghent.
